Now several countries within the Sino-Soviet sphere fielded their own copies of the little Tok (all more or less clones of the original), but the Yugoslavians took a slightly different approach with their rendition, creating what many regard as the best of the breed.A genuine Mauser 98, the Model M48 is a strong, good example the original bolt-action Rifles. The M57 is a variation of the Soviet TT-33 Tokarev semiautomatic pistol. Now I have something of a fondness for Eastern European handguns, and one of my favorites is the Yugoslavian M57. This new-production brass-cased centerfire ammunition features a 198 grain full metal jacket projectile with a lead core.I figured it might be fun to get away from my usual fare and instead write an impromptu gun review. And while the M1895 never entirely went away, the Tok saw widespread use throughout WWII and beyond, and was generally well regarded. The safety is a three-position type.The Tokarev was designed by Fedor Tokarev way back in the early thirties to replace the antiquated (and rather bizarre) Nagant M1895 revolver. A rather large hinged pull-catch at the left rear of the action allows bolt removal. Military-New condition with clean, Bright Bores, and solid stocks, with an American Owner’s Manual covering history, operation, and safety.Yugoslavia’s M24/47 features an intermediate-length Mauser-type action, a five-round staggered box magazine, a straight bolt handle, dual opposing locking lugs, and a full-length rotating claw-type extractor.

Insofar as this review is concerned, most of this ‘simplification’ doesn’t really concern us all that much, except in one key area: the original Tokarev didn’t have a safety. Sorry.) , but as the Soviet Union wasn’t exactly known as a Mecca of precision machining, Comrade Tokarev decided to simplify things a bit.

This is both good and bad. The TT-33 and its offspring all employ an 8-round magazine, with the notable exception of the M57, which uses a unique 9-round magazine. Various Tokarev knock-offs (mostly commercial models) have also been modified to fire the common 9x19mm parabellum (Luger) round.Let’s begin with the most obvious thing that sets the Yugoslavian apart from its siblings. The round was very nearly identical to the older German 7.63x25mm Mauser Broomhandle (C96) round, and the Germans happily burned up their stores of 7.63mm ammo in captured TT-33’s.

And the M57 release button is a little larger than the other Tok variants. Comrade Tokarev all but eliminated the single most common cause of magazine failures, and actually improved (gasp!) on the Browning norm.Just as an aside, all Tokarevs use a Western-style magazine release button located in the familiar 1911 (American) position, as opposed to heel clip release common to many European pistols. Another interesting design element (common to all the Tok variants) is that the feed lips – ordinarily part of the magazine in most autoloaders and somewhat fragile – are actually machined into the frame of the pistol and are virtually indestructible. Given their Comm Block heritage, the magazines are already as tough as the proverbial bag of hammers, and they’re more widely available than they once were, so I wouldn’t want this feature to dissuade anyone. You either use the Yugoslavian version or none at all. On the down side, you can’t use any else’s Tokarev-style magazines.

TT-33’s didn’t have a safety. I don’t know it the engineers had anything else in mind with this particular change, but just the vastly improved ‘stripability’ alone makes it worthwhile.The final major difference concerns the safety – or lack thereof – I spoke of earlier. Field stripping any other Tok can be a tad bit challenging at best, but a Yugo actually comes apart (and more importantly, goes back together) easier than a 1911. This might be a little hard to appreciate unless you’ve ever tried to field strip a ‘normal’ Tok, but I actually consider this the most significant improvement over the original. It works for me.Another feature that sets the M57 apart is a captive recoil spring.

It was, in a word, an afterthought. So they’ve forced the importers of Tokarevs to add a safety lever. “But wait a minute”, you say, “I’ve seen Tokarevs before and they have safeties!” Indeed.It seems our illustrious leaders have apparently deemed us too stupid to operate the original half-cock safety. Comrade Fedor didn’t see the need for all the extra parts I suppose. But unlike a 1911, they didn’t have a manually operated safety level.

They almost look like they belong on the gun, and they’re actually functional. However, since we’re stuck with them for the time being, I will say that the safeties I’ve seen on the M57’s are about the best that I’ve seen. It’s just another fine example of bureaucratic idiocy.So in short, I despise safeties on Tokarevs. Some folks simply remove them and try to cover up the gaping hole left behind. Many of them render the pistols downright unsafe in my opinion, especially for anyone trying to use it for its intended purpose. They not only ruin the clean lines of the gun, but they generally don’t work very well.

52 pistols in this caliber, even though their respective appearance and heft might suggest otherwise. I actually find the Tokarevs far more pleasant to shoot than the Czechoslovakian vz. Sadly, this is one area where the Yugoslavians obviously chose to leave well enough alone. The only thing really holding it back are the thirties style sights, which while reasonably good by the military standards of the day, are pretty bad by today’s reckoning. The Yugo is by far the most accurate of the trio.
